It’s not every day that you’ll come across an isle in a grocery store, big or small, in the California Central Coast region, solely dedicated to Croatian/Yugoslavian food products. Same with British specialty items. But you’ll find many of these hard-to-find imports at Corralitos Market. Who would have thunk it? (You’ll also find some a handful of delightful and decadent German, Swiss and Australian sweets, too!)
Croatian Products
The greater Corralitos/Freedom/Watsonville area attracted many new arrivals from Eastern Europe in the 1930s and ‘40s. Many of the newly arrivals were Croatia and had come from a long line of farmers. They definitely chose the perfect area to settle in as some are responsible for starting numerous original apple orchards in this community.
It made a lot of sense for Corralitos Market to start carrying a variety of foods that Croatians and sorely missed from from the “mother country.” Many of these products — and more — can still be found on the shelves today and are distributed by Ragusa Trading.

British Products
Unlike the local Croatian populous who first migrated to this area 80-90 years ago, we can’t lay claim to a sizable amount relocated British expats to our beautiful little paradise. So why would Corralitos Market carry a fairly large representation — almost 50 — of British treats?
“What it really boils down to is that the market’s Ken Wong married a British woman in 1976,” says the market’s president, Dave Peterson. “We started carrying some British products, and we were pleasantly surprised at how well they sold. Over the years, they’ve become really popular so we keep adding more and more items.”
You’ll find myriad international confections, including 18 varieties of candies and candy bars; also a mixture of Australian, Swiss and German goodies.
